Saw "Tiny" Earn D.S.O.

One of the men who saw "Tiny" Freyberg earn his D.S.O. when he swam ashore at Suvla Bay and lit flares which drew enemy fire, Mr A. L. Evans, was among the recent arrivals from Britain by the Atlantis. Mr Evans was 174 at the time and was serving in the 63rd Naval Division. Later he served in France with the 248th Field Company - of the Royal Engineers. During the Second World War Mr Evans was working on the production of magnesium castings for the Birmingham Aluminium Casting (1903) Company, Limited, and was responsible for increasing the firm's output by more than 200 per cent.
