D.D.T. Preparations Highly Toxic To Fish
A warning of the harmful effects D.D.T. could have on fish life if it entered freshwater streams was given by the Under Secretary, N.S.W. Chief Secretary's Department. (Mr S. L. Anderson), reports the Australian Farmer and Settler. Mr Anderson said if D.D.T. gained access to streams containing freshwater fish, such as Murray cod | and golden perch or perhaps trout, I' heavy mortalities might ensue. A recent report by an entomologist
of the N.S.W. Department of Agriculture stated that, in the Murrum- v. bidgee Irrigation Area, a farmer who had been using a 0.1 per cent D.D.T. spray drained his spray plant and allowed approximately one gallon to gain access to a dam of an estimated capacity of 25,000 gallons. The following morning hundreds of. carp and tabbies were found dead along the banks of the dam. On the basis of the figures given, the final D.D.T. concentration in the dam was estimated to be one in, 5,000,000,
