Whakatane Women’s Institute: This Month’s Meeting
The Whakatane Women’s Institute held its annual meeting recently in the Methodist Hall, Mrs Barker presiding. Entries for the Eisteddfod were discussed and the Federation nominee was appointed. Names of members intending to join the Group Travel tour to Northland were taken. It was decided to send flowers to a member, Mrs Norman, who is not well. Appointments were made of convenors for the different circles. By the time all business was concluded and reports read it was impossible to have the social hour. Mrs Barker and Mrs Smith were each presented with a shoulder spray. Competitions resulted: — A: Mrs Comer 1, Mrs Fennell 2; B: Mrs Fennell 1; C: Mrs Fennell 1, Mrs Patterson Snr. 2. Prizes were presented for the most points gained for the year to Mrs Comer (A Class) and Mrs Fennell (B and C). Gardening Circle The monthly meeting of the Whakatane Gardening Circle was held recently at the home of Mrs W. R. Sloane, Mrs Fennell presiding. The monthly reading was on lily culture. Next year’s programme was also discussed; Mrs Fennell handed in £2 for fruit sold by her as a donation toward food for Britain parcels from the gardening circle. A leaf competition, was won by Mrs Patterson Snr. other competition results were: Zinnia, Mrs Hannah; cucumber, Mrs Patterson Snr.; collection of fruit, Mrs Haultain.
