Minister Favours Picnic Race Meetings
During his visit to Whakatane on Tuesday the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, expressed a certain disappointment that the Gaming Commission had not made recommendations to foster small picnic race meetings in country districts, possibly by the provision of small totalisators. He said he felt that country communities here should have the opportunity of establishing those little meetings for which farmers could breed and school their own horses and in which the local youngsters could ride. That was a common form of amusement in Australia, and some of the most enjoyable days of racing he could remember had been at those little country meetings.
