Thornton Y.F.C. Fills Quota For National Memorial Fund

A good represenation of members, local farmers and visitors were present at the annual meeting of the Thornton Y.F.C. last Monday. The chairman read a report of the year’s activities which included the following, a discussion on the weed identification and control conducted by Mr E. R. Marryatt, a lecture on pig diseases by Mr F. Barwell, branding and ear-marking of stock also budget control by Mr L. Brown of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Field days were held during the year on cutting firewood at Mr S. H. G. Jackson’s property, a pruning demonstration by Mr Hume on Mr G. W. Mexted’s farm, shearing of sheep at Mr W. T. Law’s shed, calfjudging in conjunction with the Thornton Primary School, a stockjudging field day at Mr S. G. Ker’s stud farm at Paroa and a combined field day with the district field day at Mr A. H. Adams’ stud farm at Thornton.

Various “extras” attended by one or more of the club’s members included a pig demonstration at Edgecumbe, a Massey Harris film demonstration also at Edgecumbe, the Educational week held at. Fielding (by B. Newton), and the BobbyCalf Pool.

The closing remarks of the chairman’s report extended sincere thanks to Mr A. H. Adams, the club’s senior advisory member, for his outstanding support and the donating of the " Aotea Challenge Cup, the treasurer and secretary for their good work throughout the year and the press reporter and members of the club for their backing. Mr Jim Barr, the Chairman of the District Committee to the Club, then took the chair for the election of officers. He extended congratulations on the year’s effort, especially their effort in filling their quota of £IOO for the Memorial Fund.

The following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr A. Martin; secretary, T. Shaw; treasurer, I. Shaw; senior advisory member, A. H. Adams (re-elected); advisory members, Messrs. G. W. Mexted, G. E. Jones and Schneller; auditor, D. B. Currie (re-elected); vice-chairman, R. S'fihneller; press reporter, J. Jones; committee, to be the same as last year namely, the chairman, secretary, treasurer, the senior advisory member and two members of the club; trustees, Messrs. I. Law and J. Jones; P.M.A. delegates, Messrs. R. Cleland and F. -Broadmore; calf club delegate, J. Adams.
