Two “Bookies” Fined £l5O Each: “Sprat” Pays £lO
James Clarenee Dempster - - Rivett, Joseph Plumas, and William Arthur Kellett all pleaded guilty to carrying on business as bookmakers.: Rivett arid Plumas were, fined £l5O each, costs 10s, and Kellett, a first offender, in business in a. much smaller way, was fined £1&, costs 10s. Sergeant Collinge said* Kellett was “just a-little sprat who got caught with the big fish.” He was running shiall doubles, £7 10s for 2/6, to help but a pension that he said was not enough to keep him. The other two had admitted carrying on business since their* last conviction. All were honest with their customers. For Rivett, Mr Otley said the defendant was normally a law-abiding citizen. The only laws he broke were the gaming laws, and they were widely more honoured in the breach than the observance. The recent Gaming Commission had •shown that the amount of gambling dene outside the totalisator was considerable, indicating that the bookmakers were in business on account of the wish of a fair proportion of the public.
