BAY OF PLENTY BEACON Published Tuesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1948 RECORD COURT DAY

j. Probably to congratulate this district on its record Court day might be considered sarcastic. 3till, it' has to be admitted that, for a place this size, to have 68 cirminal prosecutions before a monthly sitting of a Magistrate’s Court is no mean performance.

Congratulations are . due to Sergeant A. B. Collinge and his men. The number of offenders against the law who were apprehended and fined indicates that the Police.. are doing their duty in exemplary manner. Further, Sergeant Collinge is to be congratulated on the scrupulous fairness of his prosecutions in all cases, and on the obvious amount of careful work that had gone into their preparation. Actually, the record Court is not so much a reflection on the district, as a testimony to the industry of the local police officers.

The impression should not be gained that this place reeks with crime. Far from it. Most of the offences were of the sort which generally incur but scant public disapproval. Still, it must be remembered that laws are made in the first instance to protect society as a whole against the machinations of those who would prey upon it, and any breaches of any laws, if allowed to go unchecked and unpunished, tend to weaken popular respect for law and order, thereby weakening the protection on which we all rely.
