BAY OF PLENTY BEACON Published Tuesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1948 Local & General

Toheroa Transplanted During last week, Skipper A. Sellars, commander of the Fisheries Patrol boat, transplanted a batch of large toheroa from Northern Wairoa Beach in the hope that they will become acclimatised at Ohope. The North Auckland Toheroa is a much larger specimen than the local breed, and the newcomers should improve the Ohope stock considerably if they “take.” Band Recital The Whakatane Citizens’ Band, under the baton of Bandmaster W. Jarrett, played a large selection of musical items at the District Hospital grounds and at the Heads on Sunday. Among the items presented were the March Winsford, Carisbrook 1 Selections, Praire Flower, a waltz, I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say, and Sandon and Berinice, both hymns.

Murupara Tennis An all day tennis tournament was held at the Rangitahi School Courts,, Murupara, last week between Te Whaiti and Murupara. The tournament was played under ideal conditions, and resulted in a win for Murupara by 15 games to nine.
