United Defeat Te Puke By Outright Win In Williams Cup Match
During the week-end Whakatane United won the William’s Cup from Te Puke by defeating them outright by an innings and 12 runs. Te Puke won the toss and sent United in to bat the early batsmen wasted no time and runs came freely over 100 being scored in the first hour. The side were all out just after lunch for 178 McKenzie scoring 50 and Spring 48. Reid took 6 wickets for 44 runs. Te Puke opened badly at one stage 8 wickets being down for 31 runs, the side eventually scoring 79. McKenzie took 6 wickets for 40 runs. Te Puke followed on and fared little better in their second attempt, being dismissed for 87 leaving them still 12 runs in arrears. Le Pine took 5 wickets for 47 runs and Rigden 4 for 37. Tauranga Team Beaten
The Midland team, of Tauranga, was beaten by 14 runs on the first innings when it met United at Whakatane on Saturday. United started well and compiled 183 before the last wicket fell. The eleventh man, Alexander, made top-score with 45 runs. ' Midland replied with 169, J. Clark knocking up 91 (not out). W. Ellis (29), J. Smyth (10) and P. Liddle (14) also reached double figures.
Bowling At Taneatua
An all-day bowling tournament at Taneatua on Sunday attracted teams from Taneatua, Opotiki and Whakatane. The Taneatua team, Cam, Toclcer, Thomassen, Middlemas (s) won the final B—4 from Duley, Hollis, McCarthy, Loane (s) of Whakatane.
