Duke Of Edinburgh Has Regular Job
Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has a job at the Operations Division of the Admiralty. He has a desk in a 45ft. long room shared, by three commanders.
Philip and Princess Elizabeth are liivng in a “flat” at Buckingham Palace until their new home, Clarence House, is ready. Philip’s daily routine is:
Awakened at *7.30 a.m. for a cup of tea served with a newspaper. Breakfast before motoring half a mile to the Admiralty to start at 9.30 a.m.
Visits signals room to sift messages which have accumulated overnight. Back in his own room for 11 a.m. cup of tea, for which he provides his own sugar and pays 9d a week into the office tea fund. Leaves at 1.45 p.m. for lunch with the family at Buckingham Palace. Attends to mail, which has been sorted into official and private and, with Elizabeth, endorses decisions on what invitations should be issued or accepted. Back to office late, but no one worries if he has exceeded the fortyfive minutes’ official luncheon break. Day’s work ends at 5.30 p.m. week days, mid-day Saturdays. Later he may be called on to do a night shift. Apart from his Parliamentary grant, Philip receives £ls a week Admiralty salary—daily pay of £1 4s, daily allowances of 12s 6d as a married man, 3s 2d for rations, 3s 6d for extra cost of living in London.
