WESTERN BAY TEAM WINS STOCK JUDGING CUP AT RANGIURU
A Y.F.C. stock-judging team representing the Eastern Bay of Plenty travelled to Rangiuru on Wednesday "to y compete in the challenge competitions for the Wright, Stephenson and Co. Dairy Cup. The team J. Barr Awakeri, John Murray, Otakiri, Don Jones and Jim Law, Thornton, was selected from the teams competing in the local judging earlier in the month. The day was held on Mr Jesse Turner’s Patamoana Jersey Stud farm, under ideal conditions. Beside the dairy section, pigs and sheep were judged, but only by individuals. The home team was unlucky in not winning the cup, but put up a very good showing on five very difficult judging subjects. Mr Ken Bennett of the Broken Hill Jersey Stud, was the judge of the dairy section, Mr F. Barwell was'judge in the pig section and Mr L. Johnson in the sheep. Because the day had proved longer than expected speeches were cut to a minimum. Mr D. C. Ross, who presented the cup to the Western Bay team leader, Mr Doug Ross, congratulated both teams on the surprisingly high standard of judging shown in this group of the Y.F.C.
The various teams that have held the cup since its dedication are:— Western Bay of Plenty, 1939; Waimana, 1940; Western Bay of Plenty, 1941; Eastern Bay of Plenty, 1942; Eastern Bay of Plenty, 1943-46 and the Western Bay team will hold it now till next year.
