Clergyman Arrested And Questioned By Police
A clergyman who went to Christchurch a few weeks ago to be inducted into a new parish was detained by the police for questioning shortly after his arrival. While he was doing some business at the money order counter of the Hereford Street Post Office the clergyman was quietly asked by a wary policeman to “come along to the station.” There he was seated in a chair, while precautions were taken against his escape. The clergyman, who knew very few people in Christchurch, was asked to prove his identity, but he had some difficulty. After an hour’s questioning his astonished wife was telephoned at ‘The Vicarage.” She convinced the police of her husband’s identity and secured his release. Some days afterwards the Christchurch police arrested the person they had been seeking—a man who had been masquerading as a clergyman. He was later convicted of charges of breaking and entering.
