Housing Hospital Staff

Board To Get Plans For Seventy-Two Bedrooms Permission has been received by the Hospital Board from the Health Department to proceed with plans for 54 bedrooms for nurses and 18 for domestics. At its monthly meeting yesterday the Board adopted a works committee recommendation that the architect be authorised to submit preliminary plans as soon as possible. It is proposed that the new domestic quarters will be away from the institution proper, and the nurses’ accommodation will be an extension of the present nurses’ home.

Mr A. F. McGougan pointed out there was little hope of getting anything practical done right away. The chairman, Mr J. Mullins, agreed it might be three or four years, but members agreed that the first step should be taken, and the committee’s recommendation was adopted. Preliminary plans for a new mortuary, estimated to cost £13,085 have been completed by the architect and are expected to be in the Board’s office within the next day or two. The matter will probably be before the next.meeting of the Board.

Medical Statistics The medical superintendent, Dr. E. T. Dawson, reported that the total daily average of patients in the institution during January had been 86.9. At the beginning of the month there were 80 patients, and at the end of the month 83. There were three deaths and 35 births, five major and 45 minor operations. Gifts Acknowledged The following gifts received during January were acknowledged by the matron, Miss K. Miller:—Magazines, Mesdames Combes, Whiteside, Goodhew, Miss J. Wilson and Mr P. Winn; Christmas gifts, Mesdames Whiteside and Hawken; cakes and savouries, Mr Bell; plums, Mr Kirk.
