No Assistance To Convert Residences To Businesses
The conversion of untenanted residences into business premises cannot be made the subject of rehabilitation assistance. The Rehabilitation Board at its last meeting was informed that several ex-servicemen had applied for and been refused such assistance. It was stated that this was in conformity with both the Board’s and the Government’s policy, and that building permitswould not be issued for such a purpose in view of the present housing position. It was agreed that, as in the past, rehabilitation finance would not be available to an ex-serviceman who approached the Department with such a scheme. “Every house so converted would mean depriving some family of a house in which it could live,” said the Minister of Rehabilitation, the Hon. C. F. Skinner. “To assist one ex-serviceman to establish a business in this way could well mean depiiVi n S another ex-serviceman of a home.’ ?
