Flock Of Lambs Turn Black On Train Trip
An odd black sheep in a flock normally passes unnoticed, but when a mob of well over 500 changes colour overnight it is a matter for comment. This happened at Feilding when a line of 565 shorn whitefaced wether lambs arrived from Taihape for sale. The auctioneers were concerned over the condition of the lambs and communicated ,with the Railway Department. A number of officials promptly went to Feilding to inspect the sheep. It was found that the train which transported the sheep from Taihape was drawn by an oil-burning engine and apparently fumes from the consumed oil penetrated the wool of the lambs in a tunnel, to change them from white to black. . The transformation was thorough and complete. Operators at the sale agreed that the experience was the first to come under their notice. The lambs were offered at the sale and in spite of their otherwise good quality only 100 sold at 24s 7d.
