Exhibition Of English Knitwear Attracts Attention At Wellington
An exhibition collection of woollen clothes, from outdoor wear to finely knitted underwear, sent to New Zealand by the Hosiery and Knitwear Export Group of Great Britain, is attracting the attention of crowds of women shoppers in Wellington. Judging by the exhibits (which will be sent throughout New Zealand), and by the comments of those who stopped to admire them, the Group’s claim that skill of the operatives of “craftsmanship” is its key word, was well confirmed. The exhibition, which has been arranged by the New Zealand Wool Board on behalf of the Group, opened in the five main display windows of a leading Lambton Quay shop on Monday.
Hosiery manufacturers of Great Britain in 1940 formed an organisation for furthering exports of hosiery and knitted goods. Membership numbers approximately 500 firms, many of them centuries old. Owing to the number of firms, and their production for export the Group is the recognised link between the British Government and the industry where export trade is concerned. “In order that overseas buyers and public will be kept informed on matters relating to export production of the hosiery and knitwear industry in Great Britain,- the Group headquarters in London is the source from which information can be obtained. Research work is being actively carried out in the industry with a view to perfecting, if at all possible, present manufactures by way of treating garments for shrink resisting, dyeing, finishing etc. Everything is being done that will ultimately be of benefit ta the purchaser.”
