Y.F.C. Stock Judging Competitions Conducted At Thornton Stud Farm
Very keen groups of Young Farmers’ Club members were present ati Mr A. Adams’s Ayrshire stud, at Thornton, on Wednesday to takec part in the Y.F.C. stock judging competitions. Pigs and dairy cows were judged and talks were given on horses and sheep as well as pigs and cows. In the pig section Mr A. F. Barwell, Bay of Plenty District Pig Council supervisor, instructed the members on the points to take into consideration when judging a porker or a. sow.
Dairy stock was judged by teams and by individuals. Mr F. S. Hutchings, a qualified stock judge and prominent Ngakuru dairy breeder, enumerated the points that go to make a good dairy type. Mr McKenzie gave a short talk on two of the prominent types of rams in use and on one, the Dorset Horn, which is ju£t coming to prominence in Hawke’s Bay. A talk on the points of a draught horse was given by Mr J. Haslam,. of Onepu. Teams: Awakeri 230, 1; Thornton A, 215, 2; Otakiri 145, 3. Dairy class results: —
Individual cards: John Murray, Otakiri, 176, 1; Jim Barr, Awakeri, 1-75, 2; Jim Law and Don Jones, Thornton, 160, 3, equal. Team cards: Awakeri 180, 1; Otakiri A, 175, 2; Opotiki B*. 165, 3.
