Old Coin Found

While carrying out excavation work in Pollen Street, Thames, between Grey and Willoughby Streets, for the Thames Borough Council, last week, Mr K. M. Casey struck a coin with his spade. It was found to be a threepenny bit, minted in 1844, and thus is probably one of the earliest mints of coins in Queen Victoria’s reign. A notable feature of the coin, which, of course, was considerably dulled, was its excellent condition. Apart from the discolouration, all the relief details were discernible.
