Headmaster’s Statement On How Scheme Works
Correspondence lessons for school children start next week. The headmaster of the Whakatane District High School, Mr I. B. Hubbard, has given the Beacon the following statement for the information of parents.
Following upon the broadcast announcements the Headmaster states that this week teachers will be occupied with problems of organisation and preparation of correspondence lessons, so that no lessons will be sent out until next week. Written work is to be sent in by pupils to their teachers once each week with the envelope or packet clearly marked “School Lessons.” This will exempt it from postage. The work will then be marked by the teachers and returned to pupils, also once each week. Any pupils, primary or secondary, whose addresses have changed since enrolment at the school should notify the school of the new address.
As far as the secondary department is concerned there will be a good deal of difficulty over the roll, for the reason that teachers will not know who may have left or what pupils will be admitted from surrounding schools. It will therefore be necessary for all pupils who have previously been on the roll to notify the school this week by phone or letter whether they will be returning or not, and for new pupils to apply for admission. Only if these measures are attended to will pupils be sure of receiving their correspondence lessons, and teachers and the postal authorities saved from good deal of unnecessary work. In the case of new pupils from both town and country districts it would be desirable if parents could interview either the Headmaster or the First Assistant in the secondary department regarding the courses to be followed by their children. Mr I-iubbard .-and Mr Breward will be at the school for this purpose each afternoon between 1 p.m. and 3. p.m. As any subsequent change of course may mean that a child is set back a year, it is important that as far as possible each child starts upon the most suitable course.
