Preventing Fractures
Bone fractures in older persons may be the cause of months or years of painful disability and frequently accidents such as a broken hip will shorten life.
According to research workers, brittle bones need not be a penalty of the later years. The body does not lose its ability to utilise bonestrengthening calcium as we grow older, but the calicum must first be provided by the diet. A pint of milk daily throughout the adult and later years will supply the calcium needed to keep bones strong and prevent brittleness. These research workers noted that the bones of elderly people may be so weakened by lack of calcium over a period of years that they fracture spontaneously. Thus these fractures are the cause, rather than the result of the fall. Such a simple rule as a quart of milk a day throughout childhood and a pint a day for adults will prevent many of the accidents which cause helplessness and untold suffering to the aged.
