Resolution, Sacrifice. Hard, Honest Work Needed To Win Peace
The Aid to Britain Campaign is one of a long term policy, says a bulletin from the Auckland Province Federated Farmers. Therefore, in view of shortages which, it is hoped, will be relieved to some degree during this year, it is suggested that farmers lay their plans and order well ahead, for the waiting list is long. It is now, unfortunately an accepted truth that for Britain winning the peace is almost as difficult as it Was to win the war. There are three essential weapons in this economic warfare—resolution, sacrifice and hard, honest work. The farmers have shown that not only are they well equipped but that they can handle those weapons with a skill and vigour which is an example to the Dominion of New Zealand.
One does not wish to paint an over gloomy picture but facts must be faced, said Sir Stafford Cripps. “We are not at present producing enough to live. We have exhausted our capacity to borrow and we are already using up our limited reserves.”
The reduction of the British bacon ration from 2oz weekly to 2oz fortnightly is the lowest bacon allocation the British people have ever received. Potatoes are now rationed, each adult- receiving only three pounds a week. The potato yield this year is the lowest since 1931.
