Newsprint Pulp Used As Cattle Fodder
The International Chemical Congress, which met recently in London, learned that cattle, but .not pigs, can be fed upon sulfite pulp, from which newsprint is made. During the war three-quarters of a million tons of cellulose were thus used in Norway as cattle fodder, Drs H. Hvidsten and T. Homb of the Norwegian Agricultural School at Vallebeck reported at the congress that bleached sulfite cellulose must be supplemented by protein so that its carbohydrate content may be properly utilised. Chopped straw processed with a 1.2 to 1.5 per cent sodium hydroxide solution was also found to be an acceptable animal feed.
