Child Saved From Death

Young Boy Pluckily Braves Tide Rip A little boy aged about eight very nearly lost his life on Tuesday when, against the warnings of his elders, he plunged into the deep channel at the Heads for a swim. Tommy Reid, aged 11, who was there playing with a model yacht, dived in and pulled him out after he had gone under . twice.

The near victim’s name is not available for publication, but his experience should serve as a warning to others, and to parents in particular, that the channel is not safe for children to swim. Fortunately, it was almost dead low tide, and the current was not running as strongly as it sometimes does. But for those circumstances the foolhardy lad and his game little rescuer might both have been added to the local toll of the sea.

Tommy Reid’s prompt action and complete disregard for his own safety cannot be commended too highly. He was in the water as soon as he saw the other boy’s danger, pausing only to discard his shirt.
