HEAVY RAIN PUTS FIRE ALARM SYSTEM OUT OF ORDER
Due to the heavy rain on Saturday, the Whakatane Fire Brigade’s automatic fire alarm system gave numerous false alarms, the first on Saturday night. The alarms continued till Monday morning, when the fault was rectified. The defect is thought to have been caused by a broken glass in one of the alarm boxes. When this automatic alarm system is out of order as was the case on Saturday, the fire siren is manually operated from the post office exchange. To do this the exchange operator simply plugs in the siren switch and waits for a ring from the brigade to locate the fire. In the case of deliberate false alarms it is likely that the practical joker who breaks the automatic alarm box and then clears out does not realise the inconvenience and worry he causes the brigade. Moreover, it cannot be too strongly emphasised that he places himself in danger of conviction with a heavy penalty.
