Phosphoric Acid Content Of Various Imported Phosphates
It should be a matter of interest to the scientific farmer to know a little of the phosphotic content of the phosphates used at present or that have been used in New Zealand. They are:—
Nauru and Ocean Island phosphates 38 to 44 per cent of phosphoric acid, Makatoa phosphate 36 per cent, Tunisian 23 to 31 per cent, Moroccan .25 to 33 and Egyptian 23 to 30 per cent. Early phosphates from Walpole and the Seychelles Islands have a fairly low phosphatic content from 18 to 20 and 12 to 25 per cent respectively, but they have a very high moisure content, in each case about 20 per cent. Sulphate of potash contains approximately 48 per cent of pure potash and nauriati of potash contains about 50 per cent. “Sometimes in advertising imported fertilisers emphasis is laid upon the lime content. A high grade Basic slag may contain upwards of 60 per cent of lime and if slag sold for £l6 a ton then the farmer is paying that price for the lime compared with about 39/- per ton for local lime, states the Federated Farmers of New Zealand. ■" . ‘v .
