DISTRICT STILL HAS NO INFANTILE PARALYSIS CASES
Strict Precautions Cannot Be Relaxed Even though some fears have been expressed that the influx of holidayvisitors may have carried the dread poliomyelitis germ into this area, there have still been no cases reported here, according' to Mr A. R. Knights, District Health Inspector, who was interviewed by telephone this morning. He said if people continued to take strict precautions, there was every reason to hope there would be none.
The position in the Waikato has deteriorated.
A boy of 13 from Horotiu who was admitted to the Waikato Hospital on Monday of last week suffering from infantile paralysis died during the week-end. This was the second fatal case in the South Auckland health district. The first victim was a child of three months from Taupiri, who died on Friday. The Dominion total of positive cases has now reached 146, 90 of them in the Auckland district, and 27 in South Auckland. Though there have been six positive cases in Wellington, that district is now reported clear. It will be remembered that the principal precautions recommended were the avoidance of congregation of young children, scrupulous cleanliness, unremitting war on blowflies, and care to see that children are not overtired and do not bathe in places against which Health Department officers have issued a warning.
