Fire In Tent 4 . ~ A fire occurred in a tent at the Ohope camping grounds late on Saturday evening while the owners were absent. The tent was a complete loss, but the personal equipment was saved due to the efforts of members of the Baptist touring club.
Taneatua St John Appeal Taneatua’s annual appeal for funds for the St John Ambulance Association resulted in the collection of £2O 8s 6d, which has b'een handed to the Whakatane executive. Collections , yielded £ll 15s 6d and the following individual donations have been acknowledged: Mrs RHill 10s, Messrs A. Baikie £5, A. F. McGougan £1 Is, Alexander £2 2s.
Campers At Ohope 'Although old hands say that the crowd is nothing like what is usual at this time of the year, Ohope has had a considerable number of campers over the holidays, and many are still there. A fair proportion were Bay of Plenty people seeking, a few days’ relaxation at the seaside, but quite the majority came from farther afield. In spite of the ban on children in public camping grounds, there have been families who have tucked their camps away in other nooks, and there has also been quite an influx of children to Ohope baches, of which few, if any, are untenanted just now. Farmers’ Field Days Farmers’ field days at Massey Agricultural College, which were well attended on their institution last autumn, will be held in 1948 on Wednesday, April 21, Wednesday, May 19 and Wednesday, July 7. On each field day-there will be separate programmes for sheep farmers and dairy farmers, who are invited to bring their womenfolk on April 21. Field days will commence at 10 a.m., and hot water will be provided for lunches brought by visitors. Annual gatherings of sheep farmers and dairy farmers, extending over several days in each case, will, be held in June. ■
Rumour Denied Commenting on a cabled report that co-operation between New Zealand and Australia may result in the two countries eventually producing all their own newsprint requirements, the Commissioner of State Forests, Mr Skinner, said that he knew nothing of any such negotiations. Hitch-Hiking Holiday Leaving Masterton, their home town, on December 27, two youths have hitch-hiked up the East Coast travelling via Napier, Gisborne, Opotiki and finally Ohope Beach. The return trip will be to Rotorua, Taupo and Napier via the Desert-JRoad. Though carrying heavy packs they did not seem to find it hard going except when walking out of Ohope Beach yesterday morning.
