Leap Year Again There are prospects for spinsters and there is gloom for the confirmed bachelor in this new year of 1948. It is a Leap Year—a trick of the calendar introduced by Julius Caesar’s mathematically-minded astronomers nearly 2000 years ago and the later source of a fable that could prove costly or unpleasant to the man who resisted a woman’s privilege of proposing marriage on any of its 366 days. “Drunk” At Hospital Found drunk in the grounds of the District Hospital on the night of December 22, William Frederick Holland was brought before Messrs L. D. Lovelock and L. H. Brown, J’s P. in the Police Court the following morning, convicted of drunkenness and discharged. The police said he had been taken to the Hospital after saying he had taken poison, which was found to be untrue. He was ordered to pay the fare of the. taxi that brought him to the lock up. Tuhoe Stud Parade Sunday’s parade of thoroughbred yearlings at the Tuhoe stud, Waimana, attracted racing enthusiasts, stockmen and horse lovers from all over the district. Particular interest was shown in the draft that will go forward to the ‘Trentham sale on January 14. From the class of the horses paraded, it is a safe guess that Tuhoe stock will fetch some of the good prices. The breeding of the youngsters on offer leaves little to be desired.
