Respected Sportsman Dead: Mr A. Powdrell
Well-known .here, particularly as a keen sportsman, Mr Arthur Powdrell died on Sunday, aged 68 years. The funeral takes place this morning. - . .. From Taranaki, Mr Powdrell came to this district about 30 years ago and took up a block.of 500 acres of unimproved land near Whakatane. This he drained and developed into a dairy farm which, when he sold it about eighteen months ago, 'was carrying two herds, having successfully weathered the many vicissitudes that beset the early Rangita’ki settlers. Of a somewhat quiet and retiring disposition, Mr Powdrell was a very active sportsman, excelling at tennis, golf, shooting, and' fishing. He was for many years vice-president and a committee member of the Whakatane Golf Club, being largely responsible for the early development of the present golf course. He leaves a wife and one.daugh- . ter, Mrs A. G. Cradwick, of Taneatua. Other relatives are a sister,. Mrs Barkman, and a brother, Mr Stanley Powdrell, both of Wanganui. ~ .
