English School “Adopted” By D.H.S. Red Cross Acknowledges Gifts
Last year the Whakatane District High School Junior Red Cross “adopted” a school in England—the Portsea Modern School —and made some clothing and sent cases of food. The following letter has been received by Mrs Winstone, Red Cross Centre Secretary, from the Ministry of Food, London: “I am glad to inform you that two cases Have arrived by. the s.s. “Tower Hill” and that on December 2, instructions were sent to the docks for these cases to be delivered direct to Portsea Modern School. In this connection you will, no doubt, appreciate that even after the docking of the ship some time must elapse while the cargo is unloaded and individual cases identified. “The Headmaster has been notified of this and has been informed that they are a gift from the District High School, Whakatane. This school will, no doubt, receive letters direct from Portsea. We are very appreciative of the spirit in which these gifts were made.” As other schools in the district intend to adopt schools in England they will no doubt be interested in the success of this Junior Red Cross effort. ■
