Harbour Improvement

Naval Expert Says Rocks Can Be Removed On Tuesday, Mr R. E. Ansley, Naval Base Torpedo Officer from Devonport, inspected the Harbour entrance with a view to advising the Harbour Board as to the best means of removing the three outcrops of rock exposed by scouring since the new groyne was constructed. His opinion is that the rocks can be blasted out without much trouble.

Mr Ansley told the Beacon that he saw no reason why this place could not have “quite a decent harbour.” It would cost a bit of money, perhaps, but natural conditions were favourable. As regards the rocks, he said they could be shifted withouta great deal of difficulty, and he would be reporting fully to the Board in due course. With those pinnecles shifted, there would be a low water depth not less than 10 feet. The Navy’s fisheries patrol, commanded by 0/ Lt G. Sellars, brought Mr Ansley here, and the trim little craft with her sturdy lines sugestive of speed and seaworthiness above the ordinary attracted quite a lot of attention from local boating men. The left on Wednesday morning to inspect fisheries in the Mercury Bay area before returning to Auckland for Christmas.
