Sacred Cantata The cantata “Bethlehem” by the Combined Church Choirs will be presented at the Presbyterian Church tonight. The Choir under the baton of Mr Watson has been practising for many months and the result should be a musical treat. Dance Novelty An innovation in the way' of novelty dances was introduced at the Captain’s Cabin last Saturday night when a Monte Carlo Quiz was announced. After a short explanation the dance got under way and it was not long before the Quizmaster had the floor cleared. By popular vote from the many dancers present, the management has decided to continue the series. / Maize Drive Mr H. E. Blyde recently made a tour of the Gisborne district and reported that the drive for. increased maize growing had been highly successful. Some hundreds of acres extra had been planted. British Food Cuts The reduction of the British bacon •ration from 2ozs weekly to 2ozs fortnightly is the lowest bacon allocation the British people have ever received. The Ministry of Food an—~ nounced that the reduction was caused by the Canadian factory strike which has reduced shipments. . Best Way That the best aid which could be v given to Britain would be the extension of hours of work in New Zealand, was decided at a meeting of the Western Bay of Plenty Returned Services Association in Tauranga. New Coins in Puddings When asked if the new cupronickel coins could lead tp any serious food, poisoning if mixed in with Christmas-jsu;d<iings, th<Governmentanalyst, Mr, K- M. Griffin, said the coins did riot contain enough copper to- cause any serious cases of poisoning. When moistened they would show a slight mildew around the edge, but this was by no means any cause for anxiety on the part pf housewives. Copper was not, even in its pure "form, a serious poison.
