Stonyhurst Run To Be Bought by Government
„ Par i of the Stonyhurst run, North Canterbury, one of the best-known sheep stations in the South Island, is to be bought by the Government for the settlement of returned servicemen. ' Notice of an intention to take over an area of 5061 acres, about half of the present property, is contained in a Gazette notice. The estate, at present owned by Mr J. V B- Douglas-Clifford, was originally of about 60,000 acres, but it has been considerably subdivided since then. It has been a successful sheep station for nearly 100 years. It was held in the first place by Charles Clifford and Frederick Weld. Clifford, an early Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives, was created a baronet in 1887, and died in 1893, at the age of 80.
