Opotiki Iron Lung Loaned To Auckland
An urgent appeal to the Opotiki Hospital for a loan of its iron lung to the Auckland Hospital Board has been received, and the apparatus has been packed and awaits shipment to Auckland. The iron lung was a gift to the Opotiki Hospital some years ago from Lord Nuffield, who offered all hospitals the same privilege. Some hospital boards did not take advantage of the offer.
The iron lung has been stored in the Isolation Ward of the Opotiki Hospital and is fitted up ready for action, although up to the present occasion has never arisen 1 for its use. A number of more serious respiratory cases of infantile paralysis cases have occurred in Auckland where only one iron lung was available for treating patients. -Dr.- James, superintendent of. the Opotiki Hospital, considers that the chances of ever using an iron lung in a district of this size were fairly remote.
