Engineer Says Erosion Must Be Checked
The engineer, Mr Brebner, reported that an inspection was made of the Island where erosion has been taking place over a number of years. While there is not any evidence of erosion taking place at the moment it is evident that it has been going on steadily over a long period and unless it is stopped there is danger of the river breaking through into the Orini river channel and forming a new course close to and parallel with the line of sand hills, leaving the wharf on a backwater. While the writer would not advocate spending a lot of money in this area, he said it should certainly be stabilised.
“The grading up of an access road to the Island should be put in hand this summer,” he added. “It will be necessary to widen and raise the stop-bank between the Island and the mainland which will be used as a road. Apart from the grading, tenders could be called for the strengthening of the stopbank and the construction of the three groynes on a cubic yard mile basis. The Board would then be in a position to know the full cost of the work before it was let.” The report was adopted.
