Mr C. H. Brebner was inducted as a new member of the Whakatane Rotary Club at the weekly luncheon on Wednesday. Messrs. R. T. Morpeth, H. G. Warren, J. Creeke, E. R. Dillicar and R. ? S. Buttimore were appointed executive committee of the Whakatane Domain Board by the Borough Council, acting as a Domain Board, last night. Lady Baden Powell is to visit Whakatane on February 2 next and will be accorded a civic reception. The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, and th town clerk, Mr L. D. Lovelock, have been appointed to attend the Municipal Association’s Conference at Dunedin next April. A seven-days’ visit to the Rotorua and Lake Taupo districts will be made by the Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Chifley, before Christmas. Mr Chifley and his party will be in the. Rotorua and Taupo regions between December 7 and 24, followinf which they will return to Auckland.
Queen Salote, ruling monarch of the independent Pacific kingdom of Tonga, arrived at Auckland by the Matua from Nukualofa last week. Her Majesty, who has emphasised a wish that her visit should be regarded as purely private and unofficial, will beside in Auckland until April, when she will return to Tonga.
Cr C. S. Armstrong was elected Deputy-Mayor at the first meeting oi the Whakatane Borough Council for its new term last night. The following committees were appointed: Works, the Mayor and Crs W. Sullivan, K. Needham, J. Creeke, A. D. O’Rourke, and H. G. Warren; finance and electrical, the Mayor and Crs C. S. Armstrong, R. S. Buttimore, E. R. Dillicar and R, T. Morpeth.
