Rowboat In Trouble Outside Heads Brought In By Harbour Launch
Just after midday on Wednesday the Port Whakatane, under Capt. Carey, was called out to • bring in a rowing boat with two girls and a man aboard which was having difficulty in battling its way hack to the river mouth against the tide rip. The rescue was effected with seamanlike despatch. Apparently the boat went out at high tide and, when members of the Rotary Club assembled at the tea room at The Heads for the weekly luncheon they noticed it seemed to be in difficulties. A member called out' the Harbourmaster, who wasted no time in putting to sea. At that stage the rowers were obviously weary and seemed to be making no headway in a sea .that had turried choppy, while the tide ran out strongly. Evidently the crew were unfamiliar with local conditions, and unawhre of the danger they were courting.
