No Travel Restrictions Imposed Here So Far

So far no travelling restrictions have been imposed in this district, though a number of tourist trips from outside have been called off, and it is possible that contract bus outings may be cancelled. Since there have been no cases here yet, no arbitrary restrictions have been imposed, but both the Health Inspector and the Mayor are appealing to everyone to avoid organising gatherings at which children might be likely to congregate, and to parents in particular .to take the precautions that have, already been outlined. Should any cases develop here, it is certain that restrictions would be imposed immediately.

Though no official notice has been given of any restriction of travel from the affected areas, families which include children under 16 years of age will not be permitted by the Health Department to patronise motor camps within the Auckland central health district during the coming summer holidays. The area extends from Wellsford to Mercer. The medical officer of health at Auckland, Dr L. S. Davis, said that all communal camps came under the heading of places of. public assembly, from which children under 16 years of age were banned under section 76 of the Health Act as a precaution against the spread of infantile paralysis. Amongst rumours in circulation this week was one that there was to be a further cut in petrol to the re-sellers, and that they were not to be permitted to sell any to the travelling public. This was looked upon as a possible prelude to a general ban ‘on travel by families with children, but inquiries here failed to confirm it. The Transport Department’s traffic Inspector, Mr K. R. McD. Sharpe, said he knew nothing about it. Nor did petrol re-sellers.
