Health Inspector Says Keep Children Away From Public Gatherings

Immediate closing of all schools in the North Island as a precaution against the possible spread of infantile paralysis was announced from Wellington on Saturday. Schools in this district closed down yesterday, and the District Health Inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, has issued a warning against the attendance of children at public gatherings. A.T.C. activities are suspended. So far there have been no cases of the disease reported in or near this district.

Mr Knights, in a statement to the Beacon yesterday, said it would be advisable for children under 16 to keep away from all public entertainments and gatherings. Children’s parties, and other congregations of young people should be avoided. Particular care should be taken as regards swimming. These are the places to avoid:— 1. The Whakatane river, particularly near the old town wharf at the back of the Road Services buildings. 2. The Heads. 3. The Matata lagoon. Mr Knights said swimming at Ohope should be safe enough, provided people did not congregate in large groups and the various bathing parties kept to themselves.
