Carpet Eel On Show A rare carpet eel on display in a Rotorua fish shop has been attracting considerable attention. Caught on a handline off White Island, the five and a-half feet fish is a new sight to most people— even fishermen. Little is known of its habits, but it is said to be highly vicious.

Thornton Garden Party Last Thursday those gathered for a garden party in Mrs Spence’s beautiful grounds, Thornton Road, enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon sponsored by the Thornton Women’s Institute in aid of. Leper funds. Apart from the pleasure-those present derived from .it, the afternoon was a great success financially. Miss Jessie Rankin won the dinner competition.

Swimming Club Picnic On Sunday the Whakatane Amateur Swimming Club held its opening picnic of the season at the Awakeri Hot Springs. About 75 club members travelled out by bus, and part of the time was spent in instructional swimming and exhibitions by Mr G. Stenhouse, the clubsenior instructor, and Miss Doreen McLay, junior girl club champion. A programme of athletic events drew keen competition, and afternoon tea completed an enjoyable, day.

Dance Championship Winners of the amateur ballroom dancing championship, held by the Federal Association of Teachers of Dancing of Australia and New Zealand, were Miss Mary Christensen and Mr Roy desJardine, of Wellington. The judge was Mr R, Doyle, of Sydney. The winning cpuple will receive as a prize a trip to Sydney to take part in the inter-State championships on December 6. This is the first occasion on which New Zealand representatives have been included in this contest.
