English Paper’s Tribute. To Late Mr S. F. Miller, Well-Known Here
“A tribute to an association of more than thirty years with the Scout mbvement, first in this country, and for the last quarter of a century in New Zealand, was paid by the presence at the cremation service at Brighton on Tuesday o'f Mr Stanley Frederic Miller, son of Mr F. C. Miller, of Rondia Broad-mark-avenue, Rustington, Mr W. J. Genese, the Field Commissioner for Surrey and Sussex, and of Mr George Djabonor, a native scouter from the Gold Coast, who had met the deceased only a few weeks ago at the recent jamboree in Paris. Colonel C. C. R. Murphy, of Littlehampton, the Deputy County Commissioner for Sussex would also have been • present but for an important prior engagement,” reported “Littlehampton Gazette,’ Sussex, on September 19. Mr Miller, who was taken ill during a visit to his old home, died in Worthing hospital on September 12. He was well-known as a baker and confectioner at Whakatane and more recently at Tauranga and had always been actively identified with the Scout -movement. He was Assistant County Commissioner for the Sea Scouts in the Bay of Plenty district as well as Chairman of the Scout Association at Tauranga.
Last July,, at Buckingham Palace, he had the honour of being presented to the King, who referred to his thirty years service in the Boy Scout movement. He had also, put in four years overseas service in the late war with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, in which he held the rank of . 1 Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion of the New Zealand Regiment.
Like his father, Mr, Miller was an active member of the Methodist Church, and the cremation service was conducted by the Rev. R. J. Bradwell, the Methodist Minister at Littlehampton, who paid tribute tc?' the deceased’s work both in England and New Zealand.
Chief mourners who attended were Mrs S. F. -Miller (widow); Mr F. C. Miller (father) and Mrs Miller (mother); Miss Doris Miller (sister); Mr and Mrs Mould (sister and brother-in-law); Mr R. L. H. WattsWhite (friends); Mrs E. Miller (aunt); and Mrs.C. Taylor (cousin); as well gs Field Commissioner W. J. Genese (representing the Boy Scout Headquarters, London); and Mrs Genese and G. Djabanor of the West African Scouts.
