Mayor Barry Re-Elected Unopposed: Twenty-One Candidates For Council
No-one has been nominated to oppose Mr B. S. Barry for the Mayoralty of Whakatane, so the returning officer, Mr L. D. Lovelock, has declared him elected. Messrs H. W. Brabant and H. G. Warren were the only two nominees for the two Borough seats on the Harbour Board, and they also have been declared elected.
For the nine seats on the Borough ‘Council there are 21 nominations, and the election promises to be an interesting one. Three of the present Councillors, including the deputy Mayor, Mr S. S. Shapley, are not seeking re-election. The other two are Messrs J. H. B. Warner and A. J. Canning, the latter with one of the longest records of service in the present Council.
The 21 nominees are Messrs F. M. Abbott, C. S. Armstrong, A. J. Atkinson, D. G. Beattie, R. S. Buttimore, J. Creeke, E. R. Dillicar, E. R. Hunt, C. L. Jordan, T. Latham, M. Lennie, R. T. Morpeth, K. A. Needham, A. D. O’Rourke, R. Riddell, L. R. Spring, W. Sullivan, F. G. M. Sutcliffe, H. G. Warren, W. H. Whittaker and T. M. Whyte. An election will also be necessary for the two Borough seats on the Hospital Board, the candidates being Messrs D. G. Beattie, L. Buddie, L. C. Richards and C. A. Suckling.
