Magistrate’s Comments On Bos Murphy’s Defamation Of Character Claim

The . action in which the professional boxer Boswell Murphy claimed £25 damages for defamation of character from three boxing officials has failed.

A reserved judgment was delivered on Tuesday by Mr A. M. Goulding, S.M., in favour of the three defendants, William Matthew Brosnan, a former member of the committee of the Hutt Valley Boxing Association-; James Russell Simpson, chairman of the council of the New Zealand Boxing Association, and Alfred Stanley Parker, a member of the council of the association.

T agree entirely with the observations of counsel for Brosnan in his address, to the Court that ‘on one side •or the other lies and deliberate lies are being told,” said Mr Goulding. “I go further and say that on both sides there has been a lack of truth and candour on the part of some witnesses.

“Moreover, the evidence shows quite clearly that in connection with the contract and purse for the first fight on January 25 there was unfair, and, I think, dishonourable dealing toward the New Zealand Boxing Council or the association, not, only on the part of the manager of the respective boxers, but also on the part of the Hutt Valley Association.”
