Drunken Driver Without License Fined £ls.

Being drunk in charge of a truck on the Rotorua-Gisborne highway at Awakeri just after midnight on October 19 cost John William Mear a £lO fine when he faced Messrs. C. H. Christensen and I. B. Hubbard, J’s P, in the Whakatane- Police Court on Wednesday and admitted the charge. He also pleaded guilty of having no driving license, and was fined a further £5.

For the Police, Sergeant M. Farrell told the Court that a woman and her two sons, who had stopped to pick up some empty bottles, were sitting in their parked car when Mear’s truck weaved . along the highway and crashed into it, injuring the woman and one of her sons. The Sergeant assured the Court that Mear was of good family and had never been in trouble with the police before. In addition to the fines, the Bench prohibited Mear from holding a driver’s license for 12 months.
