Government Surveyors Reported To Be Planning Murupara-Edgecumbe Line
It is understood on reliable authority that Government surveyors were in the Murupara area yesterday in connection with the proposed MuruparaEdgecumbe railway line, and that at least 20 men will be on the job on a day or two.
Considerable correspondence on the subject of the line was read to the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce at its monthly meeting last night, from the district M.P., Mr W. Sullivan, the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, and the Forestry Department.
Mr Semple’s letter, written on September 15, said investigations were still in the preliminary stage, but it appeared a feasible route could be obtained. However, the question would depend upon Government decisions in connection with the utilisation of the timber in the Kaingaroa State forest area.
Mr R. T. Morpeth, president, referred to the recent tour of Opposition M’s P. He said he thought the visit might well 'be the preliminary to a similar visit by Government members. In any event, he said he was sure the visitors had been impressed with the possibilities of this district, and would be its advocates in the house from now on.
