WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
THORNTON BRANCH OCTOBER MEETING The October meeting of the Thornton Women’s Institute, held on the 9th was well attended. It was members’ day and the president’s chair was occupied by a member, Mrs J. Branch, and the acting secretary was Miss P. Jackson. The meeting opened with , the “Ode to Friendship,” the Aspirations were read in unison, some apologies recorded, and minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. Half-yearly reports were then received.
The secretary read the financial statement. Reports of gardening, music and drama circles were read by their respective convenors and a report of the bi-annual Council meeting and the A. and P. meeting were given by the delegates. Gardening Circle The September meeting was at Mrs A. C. Martin’s home and all ladies felt that the afternoon had been well spent. There are 10 members of this circle and any others wishing to join will be eagerly welcomed. Glee Circle The Glee Circle practices have been fairly well attended and the convenor reports that during the month two items were given at a Scout concert in the hall and that practices are now being held on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. After reports the meeting proceeded with the roll call of impromptu questions and answers. It was decided by the meeting to accept Mrs S. Spence’s kind offer of her garden and hold a„ garden party on Wednesday, November 19, funds to be given to the Leper Mission. It was also decided to hold a sewing meeting on Thursday, November 6 for the purpose of making soft toys for hospital children.
A written quiz competition was given by Mrs Gardner and won by Mrs Ducker.
Two voluntary organisers, Mrs Withy and Mrs Caverhill were present at the meeting and after afternoon tea Mrs Caverhill gave an in-' teresting and instructive report on the Dominion Council meeting held in Wellington recently and after a short discussion on Institute affairs Mrs Robb thanked the visitors for their interest and also the acting president and secretary for a well conducted meeting. The National Anthem closed the meeting. Competition winners for the day were:— Best flower: Mrs Bell 1, Mrs W. Branch 2. Best vegetable: Mrs Sheat 1, Mrs Gardner 2. Knitting two skeins wool: Mrs J. Branch 1, Mrs Gardner 2. Brandy snaps: Mrs J. Branch 1, Mrs Gardner 2. Gentleman’s buttonhole: Mrs D. Branch 1, Mrs Ducker 2. MATATA BRANCH SEPTEMBER MEETING The monthly meeting of the Matata Women’s Institute was held in the King’s Theatre on September 24. There was a large attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship and Mrs Burt read the Aspirations. Mrs Peck gave a very interesting demonstration on floral work and the flower show, to be held this month, should benefit from it. The sales table, the proceeds of which were for the Leper fund, was well patronised by all. The competitions were all well entered for.
The meeting closed with the singing of v the National Anthem, A very dainty afternoon tea was enjoyed by all. The hostesses were Mrs Ansel and Mrs Gill. The results of the competitions were:—
Best vegetable: Margaret Conn 1, Mrs Henderson 2, Mrs Conn 3. Best flower: Mrs Ansil 1, Mrs McGee 2, Ddrs E. Withy 3. Floral horseshoes: Mrs R. Withy 1, Mrs E. Withy 2. Child’s print frock: Mrs Rolfe Withy 1, Mrs Rupert Withy 2, Mrs Reichardt 3. Fruit cake for overseas parcel: Mrs E. Withy 1, Mrs Conn 2.
