OPPOSITION MEMBERS VISIT WHAKATANE PAPER MILLS AND STATE FORESTS
Accompanied by a group of his Parliamentary colleagues, including four South Island Members, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, spent the week-end in the Whakatane district. The party, guests of the directors of the Paper Mills, inspected the cardboard mill, the Galatea and Murupara districts, and the Kaingaroa State Forest.
They met local body representatives at a dinner at the Commercial Hotel on Saturday night, and left yesterday morning to tour the Paper Mills’ planations in the Matahina area, and the Waipa State mill. The party, which was conducted by Mr G. H. Mackley, M.P. for Wairarapa, and managing director of the Company, in conjunction with Mr W. Sullivan, district Member, included the senior Opposition Whip, Mr W. J. Broadfoot, the junior ■Opposition Whip, Mr T. L. ,Macdonald, Mr W. A. Bodkin (Central Otago), Mr J. A. Hanan, (Invercargill), Mr J. A. McL. Roy (Clutha), Mr C. R. Herron (Awarua), Mr WH. Fortune (Eden)', Mr E. P. Aderman (New Plymouth), and Mr J. R. Marshall (Mount' Victoria) and M. H. Oram (Manawatu). Professor H. H. Corbin and Mr S. J. Robinson (Auckland), and Mr G. S. Crimp (Wellington), directors of the Paper Mills, travelled with the party, which was accompanied on its local tour by the manager, Mr Ernest Brown, and executive officers of the company. After seeing felling and logging operations at the Paper Mills’ Matahina plantations yesterday morning, the party lunched at Te Teko before inspecting the Waipa State Mill and box-making plant. The visitors dined at Hamilton, and returned to Wellington on last night’s limited ■express.
