BOROUGH AFFAIRS
ORDINARY MEETING GENERAL BUSINESS ITEMS Grave concern was expressed by Borough councillors discussing the Whakatane river bridge at the ordinary meeting on Monday. The Soil Conservation Council intimated that they would subsidise work to check erosion which was threatening the structure. The total expenditure authorised was £IOOO. Some doubt appeared to exist on the policy of the Whakatane County Council in connection with the work and the Mayor offered to contact Mr Burnett, county chairman to discuss the matter with him. Hospital Representation The Health Department notified that the Borough Council would be entitled to two representatives on the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board as from the election in November. The Whakatane Harbour Board wrote they were prepared to pay two-thirds of the cost of deepening the swimming pool at the Heads provided their contribution did not exceed £IOO. The council was of the opinion that the work was a doubtful proposition. The pool might fill up again straight away. , Mr Barry thought it was futile attempting it before the groyne work was repaired.
It was decided that the Harbour Board be notified that the council was willing to have the pool deepened when the groyne work was repaired. Present: Mr B. S. Barry (Mayor), Crs. S. S. Shapley, L. R. Spring, A. J. Canning, H. G. Warren, R. T. Morpeth, J. Creeke. Mr L. D. Lovelock (town clerk) and Messrs. F. W. Lysaght (electrical engineer) and W. S. Henderson (borough engineer) were also in attendance.
