LAND FOR SOLDIERS

FURTHER 5242 ACRES PURCHASED

During August a further 5242 acres of land, subdivisible into 14 dairying units and ten sheep farms, were purchased for the settlement of ex-servicemen on the land. August also saw another 111 ex-service-men assisted with rehabilitation loans to take over single-unit properties on their own account. Properties acquired by the Crown for settlement were located in the Auckland, Wellingon, Nelson, Canterbury and Southland land dis-

tricts. They comprised:— Estimated to make two sheep units, 617 acres situated five and a half miles east of Ta'umarunui, previously belonging to Messrs. Meads and Mills. In future to be known as the Punga Punga Farm Settlement, this property includes a house, a woolshed and outbuildings. Just over 200 acres, near Oparau in the Auckland Land District, previously the property of A. J. Brady. This area, which includes a house and cowshed, is to be amalgamated with an adjoining property, the whole to be known as the Parau Farm Settlement. Situated near Otorohanga, 446 acres belonging previously to W. J. Alexander, Four dairying- units are expected from this area, which includes a house and outbuildings. To be amalgamated and known as the Te Namu Farm Settlement, two areas totalling 430 acres previously the property of Messrs. Hill and James, and situated 15 miles from Karamea in he Nelson Land Disric. There are the usual buildings on these properties which together will make two economic units. Acquired from F. Charles’ property, seven miles from Geraldine, South Canterbury, 874 acres including homestead, cottage, granary, woolshed and buildings, to subdivide into two sheep units and to be known as the Hilton Farm Settlement. Six miles south-east of Methven, Canterbury, 582 acres previously belonging to C. Hale, with dwelling and outbuildings, to be known as the Ashlyn Farm Settlement and to divide into two farm units. Acquired from A. E. Miln and situated eight miles from Tuatapere, Southland, 709 acres with house and outbuildings, to be 1 divided into two sheep units. Taken under Part II of the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act, 698 acres acquired from H. J. Crowther and situated six miles from Cambridge. This property, which it is hoped will make J four dairy units, is to be amalgamated with the adjoining property and be known as the Maungakawa Farm Settlement.

The following three properties were acquired under Section 51 of the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act:— Situated three miles from Feilding, 267 acres with dwelling and other buildings, to be subdivided into two dairy units and to be known as the Manchester Farm Settlement. At Winchester, in the Canterbury Land District, 376 acres with cottage and outbuildings, to divide into one .sheep and one dairy unit. The previous owners were D. C. and W. L. Scott. A single unit of 194 acres at Rotorua, previously belonging to R. C. Unsworth. During August nine sections were ballotted for among ex-servicemen. One was at Komiri Farm Settlement, near Pukekohe, one at Omapere, near Hastings, two in the Ball Road Settlement, near Hawera, one at the Spring Creek Settlement, near Methven, one at the Montaito Settlement, near Ashburton, two at the Rothie Settlement, near Fairfax, _ and one near Morton Falls, Southland.
