TRUCK DRIVER FINED

VEHICLE STRIKES CYCLISTS

A number of traffic offences figured in the Court list at the sitting before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., at Whakatane last Tuesday.

Richard Lewis, driver of a truck was charged with failure to exercise due care and attention when turning into an entrance on Commerce Street on August 15 last. Evidence by two young girl cyclists who with another w re involved in what might have been a serious accident, showed that defendant had passed them on the road and then without giving any indication of his intention, had swung into an entrance in front of them, causing all three to run into the vehicle and to be thrown on the roadway. Incidentally no one was seriously injured.

In a statement to the police, defendant said he was 17 years old, and had been driving for only two months, that he had signalled the stop sign and that he did not know the girls had struck his truck until he saw a crowd round them. Fined £3 and costs (10s). For failing to carry a current W.O.F. on September 16 last, Frank Gordon Macklow was fined 10s and costs (20s).

* Donald Samuel Keen pleaded guilty to driving a school ’bus at a speed in excess of 35 m.p.h. as permitted under regulation. Though his speed was checked by the County Inspector at 45‘ m.p.h. defendant claimed that he did not realise it at the time, not thinking the vehicle could make that speed. Fined £3 and costs (395). For permitting a chestnut gelding to roam unattended on the highway Joe Watarawi was fined 20s and costs (21s).

Dick Tauroa of- Paroa, owner of two horses found at large at Paroa was fined £2 and costs (225). Eight horses belonging to Kuti Ratahi found wandering on the highway at Paroa pn July ,7, cost their owner £3 in fines and costs (28s).

Mary Tohungai owner of a gelding which found the grass on the ‘long paddock to its liking, was fined 20s and costs (235).

A similar offence by Te Oheruru Tutua cost him 30s and costs (235).
